International Day of the Girl Child
October 11, 2019
October 11th marked the International Day of the Girl Child, which was declared by United Nations in 2012.
The International Day of the Girl Child aims to raise awareness and address the needs and challenges girls face, to promote girls' empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights. Across the world and in every society, girls face many challenges on a daily basis, including child marriage, discrimination, sexual abuse, violence against girls and women, and inequality in education and healthcare.
Despite making some progress, many of the commitments made to girls are still unfulfilled. On this special day, we should not only celebrate the achievement of girls, but also recommit to raising awareness about the plights and needs of girls; promoting girls’ empowerment, rights, fundamental freedom and greater gender equality; investing in girls education and skills training; and creating a healthy and safe environment for the girls. If we invest in the safety, health, empowerment, education and addressing other societal issues that often hold girls back from taking charge of their own future and reaching their full potential, they will be able to excel in every facet of their lives, attain brighter future, and help build our families, communities and society at large. We need to ensure that no girl is left behind.
We celebrate this event in collaboration with our parent organization, the Federation of Sierra Leonean Communities of Canada by raising awareness about the challenges that girls face and also provide an opportunity for girls to get together and celebrate.
